Description

Red Armchair (1982) is one of the most expressive works from Annabel Andrews’ early fauvist period, now available as an exclusive fine art canvas print at And-Art Works.

Originally painted in oil on linen, this luminous still life captures the warmth of everyday life through bold color and intuitive composition — a tribute to Andrews’ admiration for Henri Matisse and her passion for color as emotion.

The scene unfolds in a corner of intimacy and quiet beauty: a vermillion red velvet armchair with a classic 19th-century pattern dominates the composition, exuding presence and texture. In front, a small wooden table holds a cup, a pitcher, a book, and pieces of fruit, simple objects elevated to symbols of domestic harmony. To the left, a large green plant balances the vibrancy of the setting, adding depth and freshness to the space.

Painted while Andrews studied at the Academia Peña in Madrid, the armchair itself was inspired by the one that stood in the academy’s lobby — a silent witness to her formative artistic years. Through this piece, Andrews transforms a familiar scene into a vivid exploration of color, light, and personal memory, blending fauvist spontaneity with emotional depth.

Printed as a museum-quality fine art giclée on cotton canvas, Red Armchair preserves the texture and brilliance of the original oil painting. Its radiant palette and timeless elegance make it perfect for art collectors, design enthusiasts, and interiors seeking color, warmth, and sophistication.

"On beginning to wonder why art has been important to me through so many years, and knowing that vitality dies with an excess of reason, I could talk about the balance between instinct and reason, and how to express myself technically with materials and colour through spontaneous intuition -with an aesthetic feeling - for a cluster of forms and colors arranged to stir the reader in a way that music does.

In an outer world of chaos : abstract painting can appeal to our senses to find psychic equilibrium."
