Description

There are moments in Annabel Andrews’ artistic journey when she feels compelled to return to the essence of image-making — to the immediacy of line, contrast, and light. Still Life in Black and White (2015) was born from that impulse. Andrews wanted to paint as if she were drawing, to evoke the intimate clarity of charcoal on paper while translating it into the language of acrylic, casein, and canvas. The result preserves the spontaneity of drawing while transforming it into a contemporary painterly gesture.

Created in acrylic and casein glue on cotton duck canvas, the artist prepared the surface with zinc white pigment mixed with casein, giving the canvas a luminous, paper-like texture. Upon this radiant ground, using black acrylic paint diluted with water, Andrews constructed a minimal, expressive still life: a large cup, a pair of unidentified fruits, a bottle set slightly back, and a suggested floral environment, as if the composition were resting in a garden. Soft washes, diffused tones, and direct brushstrokes come together to create an atmosphere that is both restrained and emotionally charged.

From a curatorial perspective, Still Life in Black and White occupies a unique space between drawing and painting. Andrews reduces the motif to its most essential elements — tonal values, line, and negative space — eliminating excess in order to heighten the expressive clarity of the composition. The work becomes a refined exercise in visual economy, echoing the spirit of Matisse in its pursuit of maximum expression through minimal means.

As an exclusive fine art canvas print available only at And-Art Works, Still Life in Black and White is an exceptional choice for modern, minimalist, and design-forward interiors. Its monochromatic palette and graphic presence make it versatile for living rooms, offices, studios, creative workspaces, lobbies, and any environment seeking a sophisticated, contemporary accent. The blend of painterly texture and drawing-like immediacy offers a striking focal point for interior designers and collectors who appreciate modern abstraction, clean visual balance, and elegant expressive art.

"On beginning to wonder why art has been important to me through so many years, and knowing that vitality dies with an excess of reason, I could talk about the balance between instinct and reason, and how to express myself technically with materials and colour through spontaneous intuition -with an aesthetic feeling - for a cluster of forms and colors arranged to stir the reader in a way that music does.

In an outer world of chaos : abstract painting can appeal to our senses to find psychic equilibrium."
