Description

There are artworks that seem to be built from emotional memory, as if each gesture were an attempt to hold onto a place that quietly drifts away. Longing for the Garden emerges from precisely that feeling: from the garden that surrounds Marisu Solís’ painting studio in the Asturian countryside, a space filled with light, leaves, and quiet movement during the warmer months. But when autumn arrives, the artist returns to her apartment in Madrid, where she works in a small, intimate studio. It is there —through autumn and winter— that she creates her series of collages and drawings in smaller formats. The contrast between the living garden she leaves behind and the contained indoor space where she continues to work becomes the emotional engine of this piece.

The original collage, part of her 2022 series, brings together layered papers, manipulated cutouts, and acrylic graphic gestures. Solís builds upon a beige background a vibrant palette of greens, reds, blues, and small areas of white, shaping a vegetal universe that emerges through abstraction. With scissors —and often with her hands— she cuts green and blue tissue paper into leaf-like silhouettes, subtle floral hints that float with delicate rhythm across the surface.

Among these layers appear typographic fragments taken from magazines, integrated quietly and without intention of clear reading. Solís rotates them, cuts them, inverts them, allowing an occasional isolated word to appear —not as a message, but as a visual accent, a whisper of everyday life woven into the poetics of the collage.

The composition is structured through open spaces, cutouts, and transparent layers, areas where the paper lifts to reveal what lies beneath or where silence is intentionally preserved. This internal breathing sets a cadence that balances the energy of the painted gestures and the precision of the cut forms.

Although the piece suggests botanical motifs, it remains a lyrical abstraction, shaped by atmospheres, subtle tensions, and the interplay between fullness and emptiness. In this vertical format, each layer carries its own pulse: the delicacy of tissue paper, the clarity of acrylic strokes, the spontaneity of hand-torn edges, and the textures created through superposition.

As in all her works, Solís seals the piece with her circular stamp bearing the initials MS, a personal mark that reflects the intimacy and handcrafted nature of a process where gesture and memory intertwine.

Longing for the Garden becomes a space of movement, nostalgia, and quiet light —a collage that evokes leaves, shadows, and the presence of an Asturian garden remembered from a winter studio in Madrid, transformed into a poetic and abstract vision filled with inner life.
