Description

In Marisu Solís’ studio, the quiet of the afternoon often fills with tiny decisions: a sheet of paper shifting with the breeze, a fragment of color asking for a new position, a graphic stroke appearing almost instinctively. Black on Orange was born from this intimate space where intuition, balance, and a deep understanding of composition converge.

Part of her 2024 series of intervened collages, the work is constructed through layered papers, manipulated cutouts, and acrylic graphic gestures. The vertical composition is anchored by a strong center: two rectangular sheets of orange tissue paper, adhered to form a solid square block that acts as a warm structural core. This orange “window” becomes the heartbeat of the piece.

Above it, slightly shifted upward, Solís places two smaller sheets of raw white tissue paper. Before gluing them, she intervenes their surface with bold circular black acrylic gestures, strokes that move with rhythm, clarity, and expressive energy. In two sections of these gestures, she intentionally cuts out portions of the white paper, creating voids that—once layered over the orange block—allow the underlying color and texture to emerge through the curves of the gesture.

This interplay of cut, layer, and transparency generates a sense of spatial depth, as if the gesture itself were crossing dimensions—pushing past the surface into a space beneath it. The result is a delicate transgression of the pictorial plane, elegant yet striking.

To refine the atmosphere, Solís adds another layer of raw white tissue paper over one section of the composition. This veil softens part of the black gesture, creating tonal nuances and enhancing the work’s balance and subtle tension.

Black on Orange embodies movement, structure, and refined expressiveness. The stamped circular signature with the initials MS reinforces the identity of an artist who approaches collage with sensitivity, precision, and a distinctly personal visual language.
