Description

Urban Garden (2023) is an original diptych painting by Annabel Andrews, composed of two panels measuring 116 × 89 × 2 cm each (45.67" × 35.04" × 0.79"), forming a total work of 116 × 178 × 2 cm (45.67" × 70.08" × 0.79") when displayed together.

Executed on cotton duck canvas, this work stands as a refined meditation on geometry, balance, and spatial rhythm — a poetic abstraction inspired by the quiet harmony of an urban garden.

The surface of Urban Garden reveals Andrews’ precise craftsmanship. The cotton duck has been prepared with casein glue and zinc white pigment, creating a soft beige background with a luminous, almost breathing texture. Upon this radiant surface, the artist constructs an elegant dialogue of green, black, and violet shapes, intersected by delicate white wax lines that weave through the composition like traces of movement or light.

The two panels of the diptych are independent, not fixed to one another. They may be displayed together or slightly apart, depending on the collector’s preference. The artist recommends placing them close together to maintain the continuity of space, though she invites each viewer to make their own choice — turning the installation itself into a subtle act of creative dialogue.

In Urban Garden, Andrews reduces painting to its most essential language: line, color, and form. Curved and rectangular blocks interact gracefully, generating both movement and stability. The result is a minimalist geometric composition that embodies serenity, precision, and timeless beauty.

This work encapsulates Andrews’ mature visual philosophy — clarity through simplicity, emotion through structure. Urban Garden stands as an exceptional collector’s piece of contemporary geometric abstraction, seamlessly merging modern design and poetic abstraction in a single visual statement.

"On beginning to wonder why art has been important to me through so many years, and knowing that vitality dies with an excess of reason, I could talk about the balance between instinct and reason, and how to express myself technically with materials and colour through spontaneous intuition -with an aesthetic feeling - for a cluster of forms and colors arranged to stir the reader in a way that music does.

In an outer world of chaos : abstract painting can appeal to our senses to find psychic equilibrium."
