Annabel Andrews

Original work, 2000

Original Medium

  • Mixed Media: Acrylic, pigments, and graphite on paper.

Description

"Plankton 02" belongs to the series inspired by marine microbiology and Andrews’ fascination with science. Like other works in this collection, it was originally conceived using mixed media (acrylic, graphite, and pigments) to be reproduced in high quality.

Unlike the monochromatic tone of "Plankton 01," this piece introduces a warmer palette. The base of the figure is imbued with ochre and golden tones, suggesting vital radiance, light filtering through the water, or the inherent energy of these microorganisms. This use of warm colors over the background of thin layers of transparencies adds a new dimension of depth and mystery.

The design remains strictly minimalist and abstract. The central graphite stroke is the defining element; here, Andrews transforms it into a fine pyramidal shape, evoking the delicate, almost crystalline structure of certain plankton species, like a crown or a microscopic skeleton. A precise black dot is strategically positioned in the composition, acting as a visual counterweight that balances the composition and the overall movement.

"Plankton 02" is a work of conceptual abstraction that achieves expressive simplicity without sacrificing thematic richness. The availability of the work as a print on demand in various sizes makes it accessible to collectors of modern art and interior design enthusiasts who seek pieces with a refined aesthetic and a scientific basis. The work is available at And-Art Works.

"On beginning to wonder why art has been important to me through so many years, and knowing that vitality dies with an excess of reason, I could talk about the balance between instinct and reason, and how to express myself technically with materials and colour through spontaneous intuition -with an aesthetic feeling - for a cluster of forms and colors arranged to stir the reader in a way that music does.

In an outer world of chaos : abstract painting can appeal to our senses to find psychic equilibrium."
