Annabel Andrews

Original work, 2000

Original Medium

  • Mixed Media: Acrylic, pigments, and graphite on paper.

Description

"Plankton 01" is an original work initially conceived as a mixed media piece on paper, using acrylic, graphite, and pigments to achieve rich complexity through transparency. This work is part of Andrews' artistic exploration inspired by her fascination with science, specifically the marine plankton theme—invisible microcosms that sustain life.

The work is a synthesis of form and concept. Its color palette is reduced to the essential: subtle grays and blacks that evoke the ocean depths or scientific observation. Andrews seeks simplicity and balance to represent these microorganisms.

The design is decidedly minimalist and abstract. The composition is structured by the superposition of thin layers that enhance the transparencies, creating an ethereal, aquatic background. Prominently featured over this background is a semicircular line stroke done with graphite, a singular gesture that acts as the focal point, suggesting the shape or movement of a microorganism under the microscope.

"Plankton 01" not only illustrates scientific beauty but also translates the complexity of the invisible world into an accessible conceptual work of art. It is an ideal acquisition for collectors of abstract and minimalist art who value the intersection between science and refined aesthetics. This work is available at And-Art Works.

"On beginning to wonder why art has been important to me through so many years, and knowing that vitality dies with an excess of reason, I could talk about the balance between instinct and reason, and how to express myself technically with materials and colour through spontaneous intuition -with an aesthetic feeling - for a cluster of forms and colors arranged to stir the reader in a way that music does.

In an outer world of chaos : abstract painting can appeal to our senses to find psychic equilibrium."
