Description

This work belongs to a series in which bold, gestural black lines form the foundation of the composition, while the coloured shapes on a blue background define and frame the expressive gestures. It is inspired by tree branches and the interplay of light through the forest canopy—an environment that surrounds Annabel Andrews’ studio and serves as a constant source of motifs and ideas for her painting.

The piece is executed in acrylic on cotton canvas, which Andrews prepares herself using a casein glue primer and diluted pigments. The work is signed on both the front and back.

Annabel Andrews

Annabel Andrews is a British-born visual artist based in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid, Spain.

Her background includes: Honors from the Royal Drawing Society of London, the Municipal Sculpture Workshop of Las Palmas, and the Eduardo Peña Academy (Madrid). She has also participated in Contemporary Art Workshops at the Círculo de Bellas Artes with José Guerrero and Pablo Palazuelo; the Printmaking Workshop of Las Rozas; an Printmaking and life-drawing workshops at the Casa de Cultura de San Lorenzo de El Escorial; and a Landscape Course at the Museo del Prado and the García Ochoa Group. She has held 46 exhibitions, 21 solo and 25 group exhibitions in London and Madrid. Her awards include: First Prize, Majadahonda City Council, Madrid, 1990; Honorable Mention, Majadahonda City Council, Madrid, 1989; Honorable Mention, 4th Villa de las Rozas Competition, Madrid, 1987; First Prize, Peña, Madrid; Selected, Centenary of the Círculo de Bellas Artes, Madrid, 1980; First Prize, Caja de Ahorros de Majadahonda, Madrid; Selected, Francisco Alcántara, Círculo de Bellas Artes, Madrid, 1978; First Prize, Majadahonda City Council, Madrid, 1977; Second Prize, Atlantic Fair, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, 1975.

Her works can be found in private collections and institutions in Spain, the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates.
