Description

Atlas emerges from an intimate and contemplative vision by José Manuel Chamorro. The artist imagines the mythological titan not as a hero punished by the gods, but as a being suspended between two realities: the weight of the world and the weight of his own consciousness. There is a mystical undertone in the way Chamorro approaches the figure—Atlas appears almost in a state of spiritual revelation, as if his inner fracture opened a luminous threshold between worlds. The drawing does not depict the myth as we know it, but as the artist feels it, listens to it, and reinterprets it through his intuitive, humanistic lens.

Atlas is a charcoal drawing on paper measuring 100 x 70 cm (39.4 x 27.6 in), and with its wooden frame, the work reaches 103 x 73 x 4 cm (40.5 x 28.7 x 1.6 in). The composition belongs to a geometric expressionist language in which the face becomes a form of visual architecture. The interlocking planes and luminous contrasts evoke a reminiscence of stained-glass windows, as if the drawing were built from fragments of light trapped within a crystalline structure. This subtle “glass-like” sensation enhances the spiritual and symbolic dimension of the piece.

The face of Atlas unfolds as a puzzle of triangular planes, enveloping circular elements, and precisely fitted structures, built through a masterful combination of strong lines, deep contrasts, chiaroscuro, and soft gradients that give the head an almost sculptural volume. The right eye, open and intense, creates a direct connection with the viewer, while the other eye remains hidden or shifted into another dimension, emphasizing the liminal nature of the character.

The drawing generates an emotional tension between what is seen and what is concealed, between the rational clarity of geometry and the visceral force of gesture. Chamorro expresses the duality of the myth: Atlas holds the universe, but he also holds his own shadows. His firm, dark and energetic line turns the face into a symbolic territory where resistance, burden, mystery and human introspection converge.

At And-Art Works, Atlas is presented as an ideal piece for collectors seeking original, emotional, geometric art infused with meaning, capable of dialoguing with both contemporary aesthetics and the symbolic narratives of art history.
