About the Work

Veil of Shame is a powerful and introspective work by Marta Prats that explores themes of identity, concealment, and emotional vulnerability.

Emerging from the physical process of linocut, the work carries the trace of pressure and incision. Each line is deliberate, carved rather than drawn, leaving behind a raw and direct visual language.

Rendered in stark black and white, the composition evokes a tension between presence and absence, where the figure appears both revealed and obscured. The dense structure surrounding the figure feels almost alive — like thoughts that cannot be contained.

This piece embodies Prats’ distinctive visual language, where human experience, memory, and symbolism converge in a quietly intense narrative.

Artist

Marta Prats

Marta Prats Calleja was born in Madrid in 1948.

A multidisciplinary Spanish artist, her practice encompasses sculpture, printmaking, drawing, and watercolor on paper. Her work is rooted in contemporary figuration with a strong humanistic foundation, where the human figure, nature, and the animal world become central subjects within a sensitive and timeless visual language.

She holds a Fine Arts degree from the San Fernando School of Fine Arts and further expanded her training through studies in printmaking, jewelry design, bookbinding, and restoration, consolidating a solid technical foundation and a deep respect for craftsmanship. This artisanal dimension is particularly evident in her sculptural work, where she employs wood, clay, stone, and metal, occasionally incorporating recycled materials that add both poetic and ethical depth to each piece.

For twenty-four years, she developed an extensive teaching career in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, an experience that strengthened her connection to manual processes and the transmission of artistic knowledge.

Her work is held in private collections in England, Germany, and Spain, and is distinguished by its balance between expressive strength, formal sensitivity, and aesthetic coherence—qualities that position her as a solid presence within the field of contemporary figuration.

She lives and works in San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Madrid, Spain).
