Description

In this monumental work, Idrissa Dommo Goro reflects on the complex ties that unite —and separate— ancestors and their descendants. “La déception de l’ascendance par la descendance” (“The Disappointment of the Ancestors by the Descendants”) evokes the symbolic rupture between spiritual heritage and the contemporary human experience, offering a profound meditation on legacy, memory, and disconnection from ancestral wisdom.

Created using the traditional Bogolan technique, the piece is made with leaves, bark, roots, natural potash, charcoal ash, and mineral pigments applied to handwoven organic fabric. The process —slow, ritualistic, and based on successive washes and natural oxidations— transforms the pigments into subtle layers of color that give rise to a vibrant, spiritual atmosphere.

The abstract composition unfolds through deep green tonalities, illuminated by white and yellow graphic elements that seem to radiate energy and ancestral light. These forms suggest invisible presences —the spirits of lineage observing and questioning the modern world. Each layer, each trace, seems to breathe with the pulse of the earth, turning matter into a testimony of collective memory and human introspection.

With this work, Goro affirms his place within contemporary African art as an artist who merges ancestral technique with a modern vision, creating an art that is spiritual, ecological, and profoundly symbolic.

Artist

Idrissa Domno Goro

Born in Bamako in 1994, Idrissa Domno Goro is a Malian visual artist whose work transcends material form to reach the soul.

The son of a visual artist, he discovered at an early age, alongside his father, the transformative power of art. This innate passion soon became his life’s path. After completing secondary school, he pursued studies in visual arts at the Balla Fasséké Kouyaté Conservatory of Multimedia Arts and Crafts in Bamako. He graduated with a Master’s degree in 2021. Idrissa Goro is distinguished by an artistic approach deeply rooted in spirituality and tradition.

From the very beginning of his career, Idrissa has stood out for his unique treatment of materials. While he has mastered conventional techniques—such as acrylics, watercolor, and oil painting—he has chosen to devote his artistic practice to natural pigments. It is in the earth, plants, and raw materials that he finds his inspiration. This ongoing quest for authenticity enables him to maintain an intimate bond with nature, which he sees not only as a source of materials but also as a spiritual companion in his creative process. This constant engagement with nature becomes, for him, a sacred dialogue—a perpetual search for the hidden virtues within the elements of the earth.

Idrissa Goro’s work is deeply rooted in Dogon cosmogony, a philosophy that shapes his worldview. His artworks, infused with complex symbolism, reveal the invisible and explore the relationship between the material and the immaterial, between the visible and the infinite. Through delicate graphic expressions and natural tones, he gives form to mystical thoughts and invites contemplation on the great mysteries of existence. His ability to weave together past, present, and future in his creations builds a bridge across these dimensions, establishing continuity between ancestral tradition and modernity.

Since the start of his career, Idrissa Domno Goro has taken part in numerous exhibitions, both in Mali and internationally, where his work has been praised for its emotional depth and spiritual resonance. Each piece is an invitation to reflect, to feel, and to reconnect with nature and the unseen forces that govern our world.
